“I am especially honored because rarely endorses anyone,” Fanning noted in a statement sent via email to supporters. In a statement, Fanning thanked Schwartz for her endorsement, hailing her as a longtime leader and an “accomplished community activist,” saying the former councilmember is “the type of leader I would like to emulate on the Council.” The winner of the primary will face Venice in the general.Įvans and Hernandez will not run in the June 16 special election, but all others, regardless of party are competing in a “first-past-the-post” style election. In addition to Evans and Fanning, other candidates seeking the Democratic nomination are: Jordan Grossman, a former Obama administration staffer Marine Corps veteran Daniel Hernandez Yilin Zhang, who works in business development Brooke Pinto, a former assistant attorney general for policy and legislative affairs in the Office of Attorney General Karl Racine and Ward 2 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners Kishan Putta and Patrick Kennedy. Gay-Porn Star Roman Todd Claims He Almost Died from Overdose In a nod to the District’s large LGBTQ community, Schwartz said that Fanning’s sexual orientation was also a benefit, noting that LGBTQ representation “has been missing from the Council - in fact, top elected offices in D.C. She also cast him as a “good guy who has good common sense” who is not an “extremist” and would be able to balance the concerns of workers and the District’s business community. Schwartz cited that experience and those longstanding ties as assets that would help him quickly adjust to his new position as councilmember should he be elected. resident for the past 34 years and a Ward 2 resident for the past 25 years, Fanning, a Ward 2 ANC Commissioner, has worked as the Ward 2 community liaison under several mayors and a compliance officer for the Department of Small and Local Business. Schwartz said her rationale for endorsing Fanning, with whom she’s been “casually acquainted” over the years, was Fanning’s long record of activism in both his professional and personal life. And now the person who did cause it seeks to arrogantly come back - and at our publicly finance expense! Unfortunately, we’ve recently lived through another blot on our reputation - and one we didn’t cause or deserve. “But I’m making an exception because this Ward 2 race is too important for the future of the Council and our city. “”It is not my habit to endorse people running for office - other than myself,” Schwartz said in a statement announcing her endorsement of Fanning. Schwartz, who frequently cast herself as an advocate of government ethics and transparency during her 16 years on the Council, and during her three runs for mayor against Democratic Mayors Marion Barry and Anthony Williams, used her endorsement of Fanning to indirectly lob barbs at longtime colleague and former Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2). Notably, Schwartz endorsed Fanning, one of eight Democrats seeking the Ward 2 seat, over the sole Republican in the race, Katherine Venice, with the former councilmember saying she believes Fanning is the candidate with “real and relevant” experience that would allow him to easily transition into the role as the ward’s next councilmember. Intimate, longform interviews like this with presidents rarely happen, and even if Maron could have been sharper with his political questioning, the best part of this interview is just hearing President Obama open up and have a conversation as a regular guy. Initial reviews of this episode of WTF were a bit critical of Maron for not pushing the President harder during this interview but it’s hard to overlook just how cool it is that Barack Obama went on WTF at all. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza) The episode is packed with witty comebacks, shared laughs and fun stories and truly a delight to listen to.Įpisode 613, JPresident Barack Obama participates in a podcast with Marc Maron in Los Angeles, Calif., June 19, 2015. Maron does a great job leading the conversation with a guest that he clearly enjoys talking to, but it is Poehler’s willingness to joke around with the host and poke fun at him that keep things light and fun. Poehler and Maron clearly had a blast recording this conversation, which is full of stories of comics they both grew up admiring and insider knowledge about the Upright Citizen’s Brigade improv scene. WTF can get dark at times, as Maron is far from afraid to discuss anxieties, addiction, and other more serious topics with guests, but this episode showed another side of the show. Consider listening to that bit from the rebroadcast as well if you’d like to learn a bit more about how WTF comes together, what the show has done for Marc and a few additional anecdotes about what it was like to sit with Bourdain for an hour.Īdditional Reading: More Hilarious Comedians with Podcasts Amy Poehler When Maron reshared this interview in 2018 after Bourdain’s passing, he opened the show with a monologue about what relistening to the conversation meant to him. We'll also note that the Fire 7 is down to a new low of $42, but we'd recommend waiting for the recently-updated Fire HD 8 and its altogether superior hardware to go on sale if you're simply looking for the cheapest usable slate. That one adds another gigabyte of RAM and wireless charging support, which are nice upgrades - particularly if you want to use that smart display functionality - but nothing we'd call essential for most people in the market for a good affordable tablet. The Fire HD 10 Plus, meanwhile, is on sale for $105, which matches the lowest price we've tracked. Those come with large protective bumper cases (the Pro's is a bit slimmer), two-year warranties and a year of Amazon's Kids+ child-focused content service, though their hardware is otherwise identical, and it's worth noting that you can set up a kid-friendly profile on the base Fire HD 10 as well. The Kids and Kids Pro versions of the Fire HD 10, for instance, are both back to their all-time lows at $120. The deal here comes as part of a wider sale on Amazon tablets. All that said, the OS is still fairly robust when it comes to parental controls and supporting multiple user profiles, and there's still a handy "Show Mode" that can essentially turn the tablet into an Echo Show-like smart display when you're not holding it. Instead, a Fire tablet will work best if you stick to Amazon apps like Kindle and Prime Video, popular apps like Netflix or basic web browsing. It remains easy enough to sideload the Play Store and its more expansive app library, but that's clearly not the most user- or security-friendly solution. There are still lock screen ads, and it still costs a $15 fee to get rid of them. Amazon's Fire OS is still a forked version of Android that lacks access to the Google Play Store - and thus, native Google apps like Gmail or YouTube - and frequently pushes you toward the company's own apps, services and online store. The caveat with any Amazon tablet is, as always, software. (A version with 64GB of storage is also on sale for $95.) While the discounted model here only has 32GB of built-in storage, you can expand that with a microSD card. The tablet gets a good 12-ish hours of battery life per charge, and it charges over USB-C. Again, its 1920 x 1200 resolution is a firm step-up from the lower-res Fire 7 or Fire HD 8, and simply having more real estate makes it more pleasing for video streams and quick Zoom calls. Similarly, the 10.1-inch panel isn't the brightest or most vibrant you'll see, but it's plenty fine for $75. Its eight-core MediaTek Helio P60T processor and 3GB of RAM won't blow anyone away - don't expect much in the way of gaming - but it can handle the basics without consistent slowdowns, and it's generally more fluid than the lower-cost models in the Fire lineup. But for the money, it's all good enough if you're just looking for casual web browsing, ebook reading, video streaming, and Alexa stuff. Like Amazon's other Fire tablets, the Fire HD 10 is a no-frills device: It's largely made of matte plastic, the speakers and cameras are mediocre, and very little about its performance or design feels as premium as what you'd get from even an entry-level iPad. This is a nice price for what was already one of the better values on the tablet market. The 32GB model here technically has an MSRP of $150, though a handful of smaller discounts have dropped its average street price closer to $130 in recent months.

No non-Christian religious group has grown or declined significantly in size since 2006.ĭemographics and Diversity Among Religious Groups Young Americans Are More Religiously DiverseĪmericans ages 18–29 are the most religiously diverse age group. The share of non-Christian religious groups has also remained steady between 2020 (4%), 2016 (4%), and 2006 (5%). Individual groups of Christians of color, including Black Protestants, Hispanic Protestants, Hispanic Catholics, Black Catholics, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Christians, multiracial Christians, and Native American Christians, have shifted by single percentage points between 20. This share is relatively similar compared to that in 2016 (25%) and has grown only slightly since 2006 (23%). In 2020, around one in four Americans were Christians of color (26%). Stability Among Christians of Color and Non-Christian Religious Groups In 2016, that number had increased to 38%, and declined slightly in 2020, to 36%. In 1986, only 10% of those ages 18–29 identified as religiously unaffiliated. The increase in proportion of religiously unaffiliated Americans has occurred across all age groups but has been most pronounced among young Americans. Reflecting the patterns above, the proportion of religiously unaffiliated Americans hit a high point of 26% in 2018 but has since slightly declined, to 23% in 2020. Only 16% of Americans reported being religiously unaffiliated in 2007 this proportion rose to 19% by 2012, and then gained roughly a percentage point each year from 2012 to 2017. The Rise of the “Nones” Slowsĭisaffiliating white Christians have fueled the growth of the religiously unaffiliated during this period. That proportion has generally held steady since 2017 (15% in 2017, 2018, and 2019). Since 2006, white evangelical Protestants have experienced the most precipitous drop in affiliation, shrinking from 23% of Americans in 2006 to 14% in 2020. It is unclear if the bump back up to 12% in 2020 indicates a new trend. White Catholics have also declined from a high point of 16% of the population in 2008, and their low point of 11% occurred in 2018. Since 2007, white mainline (non-evangelical) Protestants have declined from 19% of the population to a low of 13% in 2016, but the last three years have seen small but steady increases, up to 16% in 2020. The slight increase in white Christians between 20 was driven primarily by an uptick in the proportion of white mainline (non-evangelical) Protestants and a stabilization in the proportion of white Catholics. That tick upward indicates the decline is slowing from its pace of losing roughly 11% per decade. The proportion of white Christians hit a low point in 2018, at 42%, and rebounded slightly in 20, to 44%. By 2006, that had declined to 54%, and by 2017 it was down to 43%. As recently as 1996, almost two-thirds of Americans (65%) identified as white and Christian. population that is white Christian has declined by nearly one-third. The rest of religiously affiliated Americans belong to non-Christian groups, including 1% who are Jewish, 1% Muslim, 1% Buddhist, 0.5% Hindu, and 1% who identify with other religions. Christians of color include Hispanic Catholics (8%), Black Protestants (7%), Hispanic Protestants (4%), other Protestants of color (4%), and other Catholics of color (2%). More than four in ten Americans (44%) identify as white Christian, including white evangelical Protestants (14%), white mainline (non-evangelical) Protestants (16%), and white Catholics (12%), as well as small percentages who identify as Latter-day Saint (Mormon), Jehovah’s Witness, and Orthodox Christian. The most substantial cultural and political divides are between white Christians and Christians of color. Nearly one in four Americans (23%) are religiously unaffiliated, and 5% identify with non-Christian religions. Seven in ten Americans (70%) identify as Christian, including more than four in ten who identify as white Christian and more than one-quarter who identify as Christian of color. Others believe that the environment plays the dominant role, many times in obvious ways. Some researchers believe that prodigious talent tends to arise as a result of the innate talent of the child, and the energetic and emotional investment that the child ventures. Development įurther information: Nature versus nurture He has also argued that child prodigies first began to appear about 10,000 years ago when rule-governed knowledge had accumulated to a significant point, perhaps at the agricultural-religious settlements of Göbekli Tepe or Cyprus. In child prodigies, Vandervert believes this blending process is accelerated due to their unique emotional sensitivities which result in high levels of repetitious focus on, in most cases, particular rule-governed knowledge domains. Įssentially, Vandervert has argued that when a child is confronted with a challenging new situation, visual-spatial working memory and speech-related and other notational system-related working memory are decomposed and re-composed (fractionated) by the cerebellum and then blended in the cerebral cortex in an attempt to deal with the new situation. According to Vandervert, in the emotion-driven prodigy (commonly observed as a "rage to master") the cerebellum accelerates the streamlining of the efficiencies of working memory in its manipulation and decomposition/re-composition of visual-spatial content into language acquisition and into linguistic, mathematical, and artistic precocity. Vandervert provided extensive argument that, in the prodigy, the transition from visual-spatial working memory to other forms of thought (language, art, mathematics) is accelerated by the unique emotional disposition of the prodigy and the cognitive functions of the cerebellum. In addition to imaging evidence, Vandervert's approach is supported by the substantial award-winning studies of the cerebellum by Masao Ito. Citing extensive imaging evidence, Vandervert first proposed this approach in two publications which appeared in 2003. Noting that the cerebellum acts to streamline the speed and efficiency of all thought processes, Vandervert explained the abilities of prodigies in terms of the collaboration of working memory and the cognitive functions of the cerebellum. Saul Kripke in response to an invitation to apply for a teaching position at Harvard "My mother said that I should finish high school and go to college first." Other areas of the brain showed use by the subject, including a sector of the brain generally related to childlike "finger counting", probably used in his mind to relate numbers to the visual cortex. Some of the areas that he and presumably prodigies use are brain sectors dealing in visual and spatial memory, as well as visual mental imagery. His brain, compared to six other controls, was studied using the PET scan, revealing separate areas of his brain that he manipulated to solve the complex problems. One subject never excelled as a child in mathematics, but he taught himself algorithms and tricks for calculatory speed, becoming capable of extremely complex mental math. The PET scans also answer questions about which specific areas of the brain associate themselves with manipulating numbers. For example, experienced waiters have been found to hold the orders of up to twenty customers in their heads while they serve them, but perform only as well as an average person in number-sequence recognition. This memory, specific to a field of expertise, is capable of holding relevant information for extended periods, usually hours. PET scans performed on several mathematics prodigies have suggested that they think in terms of long-term working memory (LTWM).
